Scars can be a symbol of a battle well fought. But for most of us, scars bring with them scary memories. The memories may fade, but the scars remain. Scars can even bring the confidence level down, leaving us to feel embarrassed. You might have tried all methods to remove scars, and your efforts must have gone in vain. Removing old scars can be a challenge but it is not an impossible task by any means. Getting rid of old scars can give you confidence and determination to face the world.
Scars can be a result of injuries, burns, acne, blemishes, insect bites, chicken pox and surgeries. Scars can tarnish the skin and leave a permanent mark on the face and the body. Although some parts of the body are not visible, having these scars on the face can be very embarrassing and difficult to handle.
Before trying to erase the scars the face, it is needed to first understand the different types of scars that occur due to skin exposure and trauma. The different types of scars are:
1. Lemon:
Lemons are rich in AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), which helps to remove dead skin cells and act as natural bleach on old scars. Lemon juice helps to lighten scars and erases them over the time.
First ensure that the skin around the scar area is cleansed thoroughly. Dip a cotton ball in lemon juice. Rub the cotton ball on the affected area. Keep it on for about 10 minutes and then rinse it off. After application of lemon juice, apply a sunscreen if you plan to step out.

Massage over the scar area for about 3-5 minutes. Place a hot towel over the area. When the towel cools down, wipe the area clean.
3. Onions:
This is a surprising but a miraculous treatment for old scars. Onions have anti-inflammatory properties that help to inhibit the production of collagen, which in turn helps in fading scars. Onion extracts come in gel or cream bases that can be applied regularly to get a blemish-free skin.
4. Aloe Vera gel:
Aloe vera gel has anti-inflammatory properties that help to reduce skin irritations, removes scars and encourages the regeneration of new skin cells. Found in the form of ointments, creams and gels, aloe vera can be used on the skin every day.
5. Gooseberry:
Known in India as Amla, gooseberries are rich in Vitamin C, which inhibits the formation of scars. Amla can be used to make a powder or paste. The paste can be applied over the affected area and the powder should be mixed with olive oil and applied over the face as a pack. This helps to prevent the formation of scars and helps in lightening the old scars.
6. Tea Tree Oil:
Tea tree oil has anti-bacterial properties that can gradually reduce surgical and acne scars. Tea tree oil should be diluted with water before application on the face.
Other Treatments for Old Scars:
7. Over- the-Counter Drugs:
There are several over-the-counter drugs or creams, which can be used to remove old scars, but only under the guidance of the doctor or a pharmacist.
8. Chemical Peels:
